The current marriage options in England and Wales

The Law Commission Report: Celebrating Marriage: A New Wedding Law has made recommendations for the reform of marriage laws in England and Wales. Because the report has caught the public interest, some people think the reforms have been made or are imminent. As this is not the case, I thought it would be helpful to give a visual reminder of the current options for getting married in England and Wales.

At the moment a celebrant cannot conduct the legal marriage. Option 3 provides a cost-effective solution for the legal marriage that allows couples to have a celebratory wedding ceremony in the way they choose.

Each area sets its own fees for Registrar 2 + 2 appointments. In Hampshire the cost is £68.00. Generally, the 2 + 2 is not advertised by Registrar services so it is necessary to make direct enquiries with your local Register office
